The Idea

Build a Life Worth Living

The best lives are rarely linear. They are built through curiosity, experimentation, skill, courage, community, and first steps.

An Odd, Wonderful Life brings together legendary builders, storytellers, makers, founders, workforce leaders, artists, students, and neighbors for a grand opening that begins with ideas and ends with action.

This is not just the opening of a building. It is the opening of a new kind of campus for making, learning, entrepreneurship, art, workforce, and human possibility.

Featured Voices

Three Odd, Wonderful Lives

None of these paths were straight lines. On stage, we unpack how each of them actually happened: the curiosity, the detours, the friendships, and the first steps that turned strange beginnings into remarkable lives.

Flint Dille

Screenwriter, game designer, and worldbuilder: Transformers, G.I. Joe, D&D, Riddick, Ingress

Flint Dille's fingerprints are on four decades of American pop culture. He was head writer of The Transformers' third season and story consultant on The Transformers: The Movie, story editor on G.I. Joe, and a writer on An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. He collaborated with Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax at TSR, won Story of the Year honors for The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Dead to Rights, and served as creative lead of Ingress at Google and Niantic Labs.

The grandson of the publisher who brought Buck Rogers to the world, he is the author of The Gamesmaster and co-author of The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design. His conversation explores imagination as a practical force, and how people become active authors of the lives and worlds they want to build.

Daniel Kottke holding an Apple 1 board

Daniel Kottke

One of Apple's first employees, builder of the original Apple I boards

Daniel Kottke's path ran from a Reed College dorm room to an ashram in India to a garage in Los Altos. He met Steve Jobs at Reed, and in 1974 the two traveled across India together in search of enlightenment. Two years later he was in the Jobs family garage assembling and testing the original Apple I boards, becoming one of Apple's first employees before anyone knew what Apple would become.

He went on to work on the Apple II and served on the original Macintosh team. His story is about curiosity, friendship, and proximity to builders: proof that saying yes to a strange invitation can put you at the center of history before the path is obvious to anyone.

The Oddie District: Where It All Lives

Odd & Wonderful takes place at the Oddie District โ€” a 232,000 square foot adaptive reuse campus in Sparks, Nevada. A former big-box store rebuilt from the inside out as a place for people who make, learn, build, and create.

The campus brings together organizations that represent every on-ramp into a working, making life:

The Oddie Idea

From Consumption to Creation

The Oddie District is a 232,000-square-foot adaptive reuse of a former Lowe's building in Sparks.

Instead of becoming storage, logistics, or another passive commercial use, it has been rebuilt as a campus for makers, artists, founders, technical workers, apprentices, students, and people still discovering where they fit.

Oddie is built around a simple belief: people do not lose the ability to create. They lose the environments that support it.

When tools are present, skills are visible, ideas can be tested, and people can find collaborators, people build.

The Future of Work

The Future Is Human

The future of work is not simply white-collar or blue-collar. It belongs to people who can combine practical skill with imagination, technical tools with judgment, and disciplined work with curiosity, confidence, whimsy, experimentation, and courage.

At Oddie, welding matters. Metalwork matters. Design matters. AI matters. Books matter. Tools matter. But the tool is never the center. The human behind it is.
